Over the last several years we have seen the Politically Correct Police hard at work on cleaning up sports and school nicknames, mascots and images. My high school went from Indians to Warriors (not sure what made war mongers OK, btw), the Cleveland MLB Team moved on to Guardians.

Across the nation we have seen Vandals, Redskins, Braves, Chieftains — even the names of schools (Portland’s Wilson High) changed for various reasons.

What I have long wondered about, though, is why nobody ever seems to question “Pirates” as a nickname or mascot. In fact, largely because of Disney, pirates have become romanticized way beyond reason.
